Stay calm: some practical strategies for Christmas

It's wonderful time of the year! Yet it can also be a stressful, so it’s a good time to focus on practicing mindfulness. During the festive season, it can often be a time of heightened stress and busyness. Here are some simple mindfulness techniques to help you enjoy each special occasion:

  1. Mindfulness Meditation:

    • Find a quiet and comfortable space.

    • Focus on your breath, a mantra, or an object.

    • When your mind wanders, gently bring it back to your focal point.

    • Start with short sessions and gradually increase the duration.

  1. Body Scan:

    • Lie down or sit comfortably.

    • Slowly bring attention to each part of your body, starting from your toes to the top of your head.

    • Notice any sensations, tension, or relaxation.

    • Release tension as you become aware of it.

  1. Mindful Eating:

    • Engage all your senses while eating—observe the colors, smells, textures, and flavors.

    • Eat slowly and savour each bite.

    • Pay attention to how your body responds to different foods.

    • Minimize distractions, such as TV or smartphones, during meals.

  1. Connecting with the Five Senses:

    • Take a moment to observe and appreciate what you see, hear, smell, taste, and touch.

    • Use this exercise to ground yourself in the present moment.

    • This can be done anywhere, making it a convenient practice during busy times.

Additional Tips:

  • Set Realistic Expectations:

    • Acknowledge that you can't control everything.

    • Set realistic goals and expectations for yourself and others.

  • Prioritise Self-Care:

    • Schedule time for self-care activities.

    • This could include a warm bath, reading a book, or going for a walk.

  • Learn to Say No:

    • It's okay to decline invitations or delegate tasks when you're feeling overwhelmed.

  • Practice Gratitude:

    • Take a moment each day to reflect on things you're grateful for.

    • This can shift your focus from stressors to positive aspects of your life.

  • Stay Present in Activities:

    • When engaged in an activity, be fully present.

    • Avoid multitasking, as it can contribute to feelings of being overwhelmed.

Remember that mindfulness is a skill that develops over time with consistent practice. Over the holidays, perhaps you could teach yourself to integrate these techniques into your daily routines, especially during this busy festive season. You will definitely be impressed with yourself once you have established these practices into your every day. It truly does promote mental wellness, noticeably minimising your stress and anxiety.
